NT: More than 70 witnesses expected in people smuggler case

More than 70 witnesses are expected to appear in the case of the first person extraditedto Australia on people smuggling charges.

ALI HASSAN ABDOLAMIR AL JENABI is accused of smuggling more than 350 people to AshmoreReef, north-west of the Australian mainland, in four illegal boats in 2000 and 2001.

The 32-year-old today made a brief appearance in Darwin Magistrates Court.

Prosecutor GREG FISHER has told the court a preliminary hearing into the allegationsis expected to take about three weeks, with more than 70 witnesses to be called.

AL JENABI has been charged with 22 people smuggling offences under the Migration Act 1958.

No application was made for bail.

The matter was set down for hearing from August 5, and listed for mention on May 1.

The Iraqi national was extradited from Thailand in February.
