GATES RENOUNCES INHERITANCE, SEEKS APPEAL AS PAUPER.(Local)

Wyley Gates, acquitted last year of the murders of family members, has renounced his inheritance and asked permission to appeal his conviction for conspiracy in the case as a poor person, his defense attorney said Friday.

"He's renounced the inheritance after the trial," Troy attorney Charles J. Wilcox said. "He's renounced any part that he could get as an heir."

Gates, an 18-year-old honors graduate from Chatham High School, was acquitted in October by a Columbia County Court jury of the Dec. 13, 1986, gunshot slayings of his father, Robert Gates Sr., 39; his brother, Robert Gates Jr., 19; his cousin, Jason Gates; …
